Introducing Tilde Grynnerup

people • ARTISTS

Having grown up with the inherited craftsmanship skills from my carpenter father, woodwork is like family. I work with him in our joint wood workshop by a small forest, where my father lives retired.

When working with wood, I alternately work between my wood workshop in the countryside and my studio in the city of Copenhagen where I paint the wood sculptures. The interaction between the countryside nature and the city, is my perfect balance.

Describe what you create:

tilde grynnerup

I create works of art. Sometimes in wood, sometimes in textile, and sometimes in a whole other medium. Mostly abstract and sometimes humorous. I like to create pockets of joy and wonder.

A design piece or object you are currently working on:

I’m currently working on an exhibition in Paris, and for this I wanted some wood and brass pieces, so im working on them. Oh and some really really colorful ones.

Sources of creative desire:

Life, love and wonder. Sources that needs to be nurtured, for it not to dry out.

Your favourite piece you have created to date:

I usually say the best thing I have ever made is my son. But works that stand out to me, are the feminist works I made, and the more humorous projects.

What do you do when you are not working:

tilde grynerrup

I see friends, go for a run, and sometimes I like to bake. I sit around and think a lot too, when im now working, staring out the window. But I guess that is something in between working, and nurturing my desire to create.

Advice to a young artist who is starting their career:

Find your own voice, be persistent and be patient. Free yourself from recognition of others, and have fun!

Favourite hotel in the world:

tilde grynnerup

I haven’t stayed in a lot of hotels, but a favorite would be Dear Lisbon Palace Chiado, an old town palace kept in the original architecture, but with a mix of antique and contemporary decor, so beautiful, inspiring and authentic. We stayed in an all pink room with big french doors to the street, spacious colourful yet calm. Very dreamy.

Design hero:

tilde grynnerup

I don't really have any design heroes. Though im proud of the danish design tradition and deeply value beautiful design, I was never brought up with an emphasis on design. Music filled the rooms of my childhood, as well as my young adulthood, so all my heroes are musicians. To name a couple, Puccini and Neil Young.
