How did you get started in this field?
JAN ERIKA
Five years ago, while working in a different profession, I discovered my passion for doodling and sketching flowers while on holiday. It ignited a creative spark within me that had long been dormant, filling a void. As I continued to explore this newfound interest, it quickly blossomed into something more significant. What started as simple flower sketches soon evolved into large-scale murals, and I found myself unable to resist the urge to create. This journey has been a transformative experience, unlocking a creative outlet that has become an integral part of my life.

What is your creative process like when conceptualizing and planning a mural?

I deeply engage with my clients, listening intently to understand their vision. Recently, I've noticed a fascinating trend where clients use AI to convey their ideas visually, providing me with unique insights and sparking my creativity. While this approach isn't suitable for every client, it's an intriguing new method of collaboration that continues to inspire me. Typically, clients express their preferences by referencing existing designs and colors, along with their brand ethos. This process often involves piecing together various elements to satisfy multiple stakeholders, making it a complex yet rewarding journey.

Your favourite piece of work to date:

The project I'm working on currently. I'm creating a 2 x 2.5m painting depicting various facets of the D-Day battle. Commissioned by the Normandy War Memorial Trust for display in the main gallery in France, this project holds immense significance. One aspect that makes this piece particularly fascinating is the interpretation of colors, which adds depth and nuance to the narrative.

What techniques and materials you typically use to create your murals?

For most of my mural work, I rely on emulsions, particularly from the French brand, Argile. Their emulsions offer a fantastic finish and an extensive range of colors, allowing me to achieve the desired aesthetic. Occasionally, I also utilize a type of acrylic paint to add specific details or textures to my murals.

How do you approach collaborating with clients or other artists on mural projects?
jan erika
I have only worked with other artists once, with painters from Mexico on a mural project in Texas last year. They were truly amazing, especially when painting a large ceiling in gold paint with a pattern of wet plaster—it was breathtaking. Despite the language barrier, we communicated through patterns and music, often listening to Gypsy Kings for inspiration.
In terms of reaching out to potential clients, I proactively approach companies I'd love to work with, initiate conversations with their representatives, and attend networking events to make connections. It's a blend of various strategies that allows me to expand my opportunities.

Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you're particularly excited about?

My new collection of wallpapers, featuring over 50 designs, is set to launch in just a few weeks through Muraspec. Collaborating with them on this line of papers has been a fantastic experience, and I'm thrilled with the result—they truly are lovely.
Additionally, I'm working with Argile again on their Sky Collection paints. I'll be traveling to Paris and Lyon to paint live at the launch parties for the designers, showcasing a collection of skies to accompany the launch.

People, sunsets, weather, the sky, spring flowers, new leaves, and nature—all of these elements inspire me. I'm particularly captivated by the changes of the seasons and how they unfold around me. However, above all, music holds a special place in my heart. I'm deeply moved and influenced by music—it's a constant source of inspiration and creativity in my work.

Too many to mention! From everyday encounters with ordinary people to interactions with renowned figures in the design or acting world. I am continuously inspired by the diverse individuals I come across in my daily life, and I make it a point to engage in conversations wherever I go.

Favourite film?

I'm a sucker for an autobiographical movie rooted in truth. Films like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" resonate deeply, with their captivating blend of light, music, scenography, and costumes. Another standout is "One Life," starring Anthony Hopkins, which left a lasting impression on me. These narratives, drawn from iconic moments in time, continue to reappear, which I love!
