Describe what you create:

femke

I specialize in crafting unique and personalized elements for residentials en hospitality projects, ranging from custom carpets to bespoke mirrors, wall objects, textile panels, and beyond. I’m bridging the gap between art and design, I transform my pieces into functional artworks. My textile art panels enhance not only the aesthetics but also improve the acoustics of a space, while my art objects transform into stylish lamps at night. As a designer, versatility is key—I welcome various projects and materials to work with as long as I can infuse them with my unique signature. Recently, I've also initiated collaborations with brands, marking a new step in building my brand. Last February I launched my first collaboration, a curtain collection, with the Indian brand, Tulio.

A design piece or object you are currently working on?

femke

I just launched a new piece I’m very happy with, it’s a mirror in a ‘melting’ shape. I sketched it on the plane after a visit to futuristic Dubai. I think it really reflects me at this moment in time. I'm working on a collection called 'Space Jewels’. These are jewels designed for your home. My first design—a mirror—is a reality. Currently, I'm working on expanding this collection with various items.

What is one femm piece you shouldn't live without?

femke

My woven panels. ‘OUV’ is my favourite piece. People mistake it for a painting due to it’s detailed weaving. It adds a lot of texture and softness to a room full of hard materials. U can also choose for a woven panel with our without acoustic filling. The acoustic filling reduces disruptive sound reflections and contributes to a more relaxed work or home environment.

From where or what do you draw most of your inspiration?

femke

Nature keeps on giving. This is a huge source of inspiration for me. From the sunset in my hometown Amsterdam to the coral reefs from the ocean. Traveling and immersing myself in new environments, cultures, crafts, and nature is my way of staying 'open' to inspiration. It's during these journeys that I feel most grounded and receptive to creative ideas. I went to India recently and was amazed by their unique crafts and handwork—techniques we don't have in Europe anymore. I find it fascinating, and I love blending these traditional crafts with my contemporary and colourful signature. This results in unique designs!

What does a typical work day look like for you?

femke

I'm a creature of habit. I love doing the same things every day. I begin my day with a meditation session at home and then bike to my studio, which is a 7-minute ride from my house. Here, I kick off my working day with a cup of coffee and a to-do list. On top of my list I always write down a quote that aligns with my day like ‘ride the wave’ or a thing I’m thankful for. I prioritize swift responses to emails, tackling them first. As for designing, I find my creative flow peaks in the afternoon, so I reserve that time for the entire design process.

Favourite material to work with?

femke

As a textile lover, I've always been fascinated by its richness and texture. Whenever I see textiles, I can't help but touch them. A dream of mine has been to design a collection of hand-knotted carpets. Recently, I’ve visited an amazing brand in India, and we are now in the process of exploring the steps for a collaboration together. Keep you posted!

femke

I love the ME Dubai Hotel, It’s entirely designed by Zaha Hadid, It was one of her latest designs and I’m a huge fan of her. Later this year ME Dubai will host a exhibition showcasing my work. A match made in heaven, where we plan to make a grand statement!

Design hero:

femke

I love the work from Dutch designer Dirk van der Kooij. His designs are timeless classics that endure. I often dream about having a melting pot table or a fresnel lamp. And, of course, Patricia Urquiola; her designs are always on point. I see her as a role model in the world of design.
