What’s your first memory of designing a place?
JOão gameiro
My first memory of designing a place was when I was probably 12 years old, building a treehouse. I remember being fascinated by the details of how the wood interlocked and spent hours imagining how the interiors could be both comfortable and neat. Even back then, I was drawn to creating spaces that were not only functional but also thoughtful in design.

The most important project you’ve designed to date:
JOão gameiro
The Lapa Apartment stands out as a significant project because it gave me the opportunity to test out ideas I had been collecting for years. The apartment’s existing historical character, combined with the challenge of integrating contemporary design elements, allowed me to learn and evolve. It was a perfect blend of respecting the past while shaping the future.

What constitutes great design?
JOão gameiro
Great design balances form and function, creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also enhance the way we live. It’s about storytelling through space, using materials thoughtfully and making sure the design is both timeless and adaptable. It adds value to the experience, and to the property itself. The sensorial experience is paramount.

Favourite material to work with:
JOão gameiro
Salt. We discovered it a couple of years ago, while doing the Austa restaurant project in the Algarve. Its performative aspect is fascinating—it acts as a natural dehumidifier, looks like stone, and has natural purifying properties. It’s an unconventional material that surprises people, but it brings a unique texture and function to a space. We are currently working in several pieces and collections, using this incredible material.

Penthouse or townhouse?
JOão gameiro
Penthouse. I love the city and the energy of being surrounded by people, the arts, and other cultural inputs. A penthouse provides the perfect vantage point to feel connected to the pulse of the urban environment while still offering a sense of escape.
