Can you tell us a bit about how your ceramic practice began?
jenny carlin
I started making ceramics when I first arrived in London from South Africa almost 30 years ago. I was looking for an escape from the greyness of winter and joined a local community pottery studio and was immediately hooked. I have always loved African pots the simplicity of design and smoke fired decoration, so it was a natural progression to start exploring ‘painting’ on pots with fire and oxides.

Who and what are your biggest influences?
jenny carlin
Mark Rothko, I love that his colours and shapes seem to breathe and invite you through a doorway to new perspectives. South Africa is my biggest influence. Every piece I make is an attempt to open a door to the vibrancy of the African light and landscape.

What are the most exciting and daunting elements as the finished piece is revealed after firing?
jenny carlin
Saggar firing techniques can be unpredictable, the risk of thermal shock is high, and you can miss the moment when colours are at their most vibrant by minutes. It is a roller coaster ride but when you see the piece has survived and been graced with a stunning surface it is pure magic. For me, the vessel becomes a ‘living’ thing separate from the making and is worth the risk.

One inspiration site you like to visit in London?
jenny carlin
The V&A Museum, it has such a diverse collection and with every visit I discover new hidden treasure tucked away. The Victorian tea rooms with designer Gamble’s original mosaic tiles is a journey back in time and the perfect place to end with a cup of tea.
