Could you please give us a quick introduction? When did you first decide you wanted to become an interior designer?

anila ali

From a young age, I was captivated by the interplay of colors, textures, and art. This fascination led me to study Design & Technology in middle school, where I honed my understanding of structure, materials, and electronics. By the time I was 14, I knew I wanted to pursue Architecture, a decision greatly influenced by my mother. She recognized my talent and consistently supported my passion, encouraging me to follow my dreams.

What is your main priority when starting projects? Is there a foundational element inherent to your practice, philosophy, and approach?

anila ali

At Blank Space Design, our top priority is to deeply understand our client’s vision and requirements. We aim to seamlessly translate that vision into a balance of functionality and aesthetics. However, what truly sets us apart is our meticulous attention to detail and our commitment to partnering with the right contractors and sourcing the best products to bring the vision to life. Additionally, we are passionate about exploring and introducing our clients to innovative materials, products, and technologies, ensuring that they are informed about the latest trends and possibilities available in the market.

How do you organise and manage the competing demands of modern business and life? Do you have any tips or tricks you could share with us that help you in your day-to-day?

anila ali

It can be challenging, but my passion for design makes it a fulfilling journey. I start each day with intention, mapping out my priorities by reviewing ongoing projects and setting clear goals. This helps me stay focused and organized.

One of my favorite strategies is to embrace flexibility, go with the flow and tackle each crisis or situation with an open mind. I make it a point to incorporate short breaks throughout the day; whether it’s a quick walk or a moment to brainstorm, these pauses rejuvenate my creativity. Additionally, I find that surrounding myself with a supportive team fosters collaboration and innovation, which is essential in this fast-paced industry. Ultimately, it’s about finding that balance and nurturing both my professional and personal growth in a way that feels harmonious and rewarding.

What do you feel is the most challenging part of being a designer today? And if you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?

anila ali

One of the most challenging aspects of being a designer today is navigating the overwhelming influence of social media. With endless inspiration available on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, it can be tempting to replicate trends without considering their unique context. I believe that true design should be about authenticity and responding thoughtfully to each client’s needs, rather than simply following what’s popular.

If I could change one thing about the industry, it would be to encourage a greater emphasis on originality and innovation. I’d love to see more designers embracing their individual styles and perspectives, moving away from trends that can lead to homogenized designs. By fostering a culture of creativity and critical thinking, we can create spaces that are not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful and functional.

What advice would you give to emerging designers who want to follow your path? What was one of your biggest lessons learned since starting your firm?

anila ali

My advice to emerging designers is to embrace your unique voice and experiment fearlessly. The design world is rich with possibilities, so draw inspiration from diverse sources—art, nature, and everyday life can spark fresh ideas.

One of my biggest lessons has been the importance of resilience. The journey is filled with challenges, but each setback offers a chance for growth. Stay true to your vision while being adaptable, and surround yourself with inspiring mentors and peers. Trust the process and believe in your potential to make a meaningful impact in the design world.

What’s next – can you share with us your vision and some of your goals?

anila ali

As I look to the future of Blank Space, I'm excited about several upcoming initiatives. In the next few months, I’ll be collaborating with an old friend and German based Creative Director,  Owais Baig  to rebrand our logo and refresh our social media presence, which I believe will better reflect our evolving identity. We’re also launching a new website that will showcase our latest projects and design philosophy in a more dynamic way.

Beyond that, I have ambitious plans to take on larger, more innovative projects that challenge the status quo and inspire both clients and the design community. Expanding our team is also a key goal, as I want to create a collaborative environment where fresh ideas can thrive. Ultimately, my vision is to solidify Blank Space Design as a leader in high-end design, known for both creativity and exceptional client experiences.

Best design hotel in the world?

anila ali

One of my top picks is the Yasuragi Spa Hotel in Sweden. It’s arguably the most peaceful hotel I’ve ever experienced. Nestled in nature, the design harmonizes beautifully with its serene surroundings, creating a tranquil oasis for relaxation. It's a place where you can truly unwind and reconnect with yourself.

What are the top 3 suppliers you love working with?

I’ve been working with Casa Mia for years now, so they are always a go to when it comes to Tiles & Sanitary ware. NGC Nafees for wallcoverings, and Rugberry for amazing rugs at affordable prices.

Design inspiration hero?

anila ali

I have immense admiration for Kelly Wearstler, whose edgy and bold designs push the boundaries of contemporary aesthetics. Her ability to blend unexpected elements creates spaces that are both striking and innovative. I also deeply respect Antoni Gaudí for his groundbreaking approach to design. His fearless creativity and willingness to break away from traditional norms have left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape. Both of these visionaries inspire me to embrace originality and challenge conventions in my own work.
