Could you please give us a quick introduction? When did you first decide you wanted to become an interior designer?
Peiter & Michelle
Our journey into interior design came from a desire for change and fulfillment. We both felt unsatisfied in our corporate careers, which inspired Michelle to follow her childhood dream of becoming an interior designer. She took evening classes while working for a well-known Dutch designer during the day. Eventually, Pieter also left his job, and after a life-changing sabbatical in South Africa with our kids, we founded Even Eleven.

What is your main priority when starting projects? Is there a foundational element inherent to your practice, philosophy, and approach?
pieter & Michelle
Our top priority is always to establish a deep connection with our clients. We believe that the foundation of our work is creating designs that truly reflect the client's personality and values. Achieving this level of personalization takes time, which is not always abundant in this industry. However, our clients come to us because they know from our previous work that we prioritize delivering something completely unique, something they haven't seen elsewhere. We don’t follow trends; we focus solely on individuality and authenticity, combining contrasting elements in ways that both surprise and inspire.

How do you organise and manage the competing demands of modern business and life? Do you have any tips or tricks you could share with us that help you in your day-to-day?
pieter & Michelle
For us, business and personal life are completely intertwined. We built our design studio right next to our home, which also serves as our showhouse. When school is over, our three young children come home, often bringing friends along to check out what is happening in the studio. In fact, our 5-year-old daughter loves nothing more than designing her own dream room in the studio and presenting it to our team.
Since we run Even Eleven together as a family, conversations about work happen naturally throughout the day. This allows us to casually discuss long-term strategy and future plans, even in the evening. Our work feels more like a hobby than a job, which is something we cherish.
Our tip: Deep down, you already know where your passion lies. Do not let yourself be influenced by what others think—follow your heart. Success will naturally follow when you pursue what truly makes you happy.

What do you feel is the most challenging part of being a designer today? And if you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
pieter & michelle
The most challenging aspect is the relentless pace of trends and demands, which often pressure designers to compromise their originality. If we could change one thing, it would be the industry's fixation on trends. Design should focus on creating lasting value and authenticity, with spaces that are timeless and truly unique rather than just following fleeting fads.

What advice would you give to emerging designers who want to follow your path? What was one of your biggest lessons learned since starting your firm?
pieter & michelle
Our advice is to stay true to yourself. Do not get overly influenced by other designers' work—focus on developing your own voice and creating spaces that truly resonate with the people you are designing for. Stick to your own style, and in time, clients will come to you because of your unique approach.

What’s next – can you share with us your vision and some of your goals?
pieter & michelle
Our next big goal is to take on a project like a boutique hotel or safari lodge, where we can push our creative boundaries and create immersive environments. We are also excited about continuing to design custom furniture for brands, bringing our one-of-a-kind pieces to a larger audience.

Best design hotel in the world?

Boutique Hotel De Durgerdam, a charming retreat just outside of Amsterdam where time seems to stand still. It is a perfect blend of history and modern comfort.

On your coffee table right now?

Besides some stray toys from our kids, we have the book African Artists: From 1882 to Now, which serves as a beautiful reminder of our deep love for Africa.

What are the top 3 suppliers you love working with?
pieter & michelle
The Netherlands is home to some incredible vintage suppliers. Visiting Morentz feels like a special outing, and we often find hidden treasures at places like AtKris, Atelier Uma, Cocoon Collectables, and Rijpvintage.
Table du Sud creates affordable, locally-made solid wood tables. With countless options for tabletop shapes, leg designs, colors, and finishes, you can create a fully customized piece. We recently had the privilege of designing custom table legs for them, which will be available starting in late October.
L'Authentique offers gorgeous, rich paint colors with unique finishes like terra and lime paint, giving a distinct look compared to standard latex. Their sofas are also beautifully designed and incredibly comfortable. We’re excited to be collaborating with them soon to release our own color line, and we’ve also had the chance to design a sofa in partnership with them.

Design inspiration hero?
pieter & michelle
We admire designers who dare to step off the beaten path and make unconventional choices. A great example of this is YSG Studio from Australia.
