WITH OMAR NAKKASH

Omar Nakkash, founder of Nakkash Design Studio, has brought a fresh, holistic perspective to Dubai's design scene since establishing his multidisciplinary practice in 2015. With a background in Design and Management from Parsons in New York and graduate studies in Interior Design from Milan’s Scuola Politecnica di Design, Omar blends global influences with a deep understanding of local culture. His studio takes an occupant-focused approach, prioritizing the unique needs and experiences of those who inhabit each space. The result is a portfolio of carefully balanced, harmonious environments across residential and commercial sectors that reflect both functionality and refined aesthetics.

We sat down with Omar to cherry-pick his favourite design spots in Dubai, just in time for Dubai Design Week. With his unique perspective and expertise, Omar guides us through the city’s hidden gems and must-visit destinations, offering an insider’s view of Dubai’s vibrant design scene.

XVA Gallery

Located in the historical Al Fahidi Neighborhood, XVA brings together emerging talent and leading artists in the Arab world with a curated selection of contemporary art. Zawyeh Gallery and Tabari Art Space are also highly recommended for contemporary art enthusiasts.

A lunch to indulge into:

Bungalow 34

A beautiful spot inspired by the Mediterranean Riviera, great for seafood and other tasty Mediterranean treats. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sunset.

A COCKTAIL OR WINE BAR:

Honeycomb HIFI

It’s an Izakaya style eatery and the first ‘listening bar’ in the region.  It has a cool eclectic style far from the fancy vibe of Dubai, which make it rare at authentic at the same time.  You can find vinyl records and books and enjoy DJ sessions and art exhibitions.

A breakfast and coffee stop:

Orijins DIFC

Takes inspiration from the beautiful imperfections found in nature. Sleek design and great coffee.

A fine dining restaurant:

Moonrise

A Michelin-starred 12-seat Omakase restaurant offering the finest Middle Eastern cuisine with a Japanese touch. It’s a nice, intimate experience with stunning views of the Dubai skyline. Chef Solemann Haddad is an impressive talent for his age, especially being a self-taught chef.

A design hotel to stay in:

The Lana

Soft, elegant design with magnificent views of Marasi Marina. A place for seekers of modern and quiet luxury.

An artisan everyone should know about:

Omar Al Gurg

Art passionate and architect, he founded MODU Method a destination for versatile, modular pieces inspired by a passion for collecting and the beauty of everyday objects.

A Place to Find Art, Furniture, Design Objects:

Collectional

As an interior designer, I’m always looking for unique places to find art, furniture, and accessories. Collectional is a fantastic platform for curated pieces from international designers and artists.

A must see spot for any tourist:

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Also known as Al Bastakiya, it is one of the last vestiges of ancient Dubai. The best way to explore the city’s traditions and cultural heritage while escaping the high-rises is by wandering through this historical site in Dubai Creek. Elements like the Barjeel (rooftop wind tower), high and narrow windows, and shaded courtyards exemplify the traditional Emirati architecture. It’s a great place to explore, with art galleries, shops, and cafés.
